ISO Tank Container Classification and Application

Isotank (tank container) international standard tank is a stainless steel pressure vessel installed in a fastened external frame. The tank liner is mostly made of 316 stainless steel. Most tanks have steam or electric heating devices, inert gas protection devices, pressure reducing devices and other optional equipment required for fluid transportation and loading and unloading.

A container used for transporting liquid goods such as alcohol, oil, liquid food, chemicals, etc. It is mainly composed of liquid tank and frame. The liquid tank is oval or approximately spherical and adopts double-layer structure. The inner wall is made of stainless steel; Or made of other rigid materials, but it needs to be coated with a layer of epoxy resin to prevent the corrosion of liquid goods. The outer wall is made of thermal insulation material. Generally, there is a round loading port on the tank top and a unloading valve on the tank bottom. There are high-pressure liquid tank, low-pressure liquid tank, thermal insulation liquid tank, liquid tank with heating device, etc. The frame is made of high-strength steel, and the liquid tank is placed in the middle of the frame. The handling, loading, unloading and storage of tank containers shall be in a special place and equipped with special fire safety equipment.

Classification – the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its international maritime dangerous goods code (IMDG) classify such tanks into the following categories:

(1) IMO type 0

Non dangerous goods, non-toxic and non corrosive goods with a flash point of more than 61 ℃, goods outside the embargo list of international executive agencies, liquid food, but alcoholic drinks with a flash point of more than 21 ℃ or an alcohol content of more than 25% shall be transported in IMO 1 tank containers and unloaded from the bottom of the tank.

(2) IMO type 1

Tank container of dangerous goods, with maximum allowable working pressure of more than 1.75 bar, carrying liquid chemicals with flash point lower than 0 ℃, some chemicals with high toxicity or corrosivity, spontaneous combustion goods, dangerous goods in case of humidity, goods with self oxidation, liquid goods with sealing pressure not exceeding the allowable pressure of the tank, and tanks carrying corrosive and unstable goods, It shall be made of special steel and the necessary lining shall be considered. The sum of the water vapor pressure in the tank at 65 “C and other partial pressures resulting therefrom and 0.35 kg / cm shall not exceed the design pressure of the tank body, and the materials can be discharged from the tank bottom or top.

(3) IMO type 2

For the tank container of sub dangerous goods, the maximum allowable working pressure is greater than 1.0 bar and less than 1.75 bar, the liquid goods with flash point of 0 ℃ to 61 ℃ and no other dangers, some chemicals with low danger, toxicity or corrosivity, and the liquid goods with sealing pressure lower than 172.4 kPa but not exceeding the allowable working pressure of the tank body shall be unloaded from the tank bottom.

(4) IMO type 4

Road tank car with type 1 or type 2 box.

(5)IMO type 5

Liquid gas tank is used to transport non refrigerated liquefied gas or low risk normal temperature chemicals, which are unloaded from the tank bottom.

(6) IMO type 6

Road tank car with type 5 box.

(7) IMO type 7

Refrigerated liquid gas tank with thermal insulation layer is used to transport refrigerated liquefied gas or low-temperature liquefied gas and liquid perishable goods requiring temperature control, and is unloaded from the tank bottom.

(8) IMO type 8

Road tank car with type 7 box.

The portable tank guide is applicable to dangerous goods that are allowed to be transported in portable tanks. Each portable tank guide consists of English letter T and Arabic numerals (T1 to – 175). Each guide represents a technical specification.

Advantages — in addition to all the advantages of containerized transportation, compared with the transportation mode of “several drums are loaded into one dry goods standard container”, it has many advantages, such as economy, convenience, safety, environmental protection, beauty and so on.

1、 Economic benefits:

For example, a 20 foot container tank (24000 liters) can carry 45% more liquid goods than a 20 foot standard dry container full of drums. That is, “more shipments at the same freight” reduces the land transportation and sea transportation costs per unit of goods. In addition, the use of tank containers can save the purchase and disposal costs of drums. These are two direct cost savings in the transportation process.

2、 Shortcut:

The use of tanks and boxes will not have expensive and time-consuming process of small barrel flushing and loading and unloading. The transportation mode can be directly changed between highway, railway and water transportation. The operation is simple, fast and in one step. It can truly achieve “door-to-door” transportation.

3、 Increased security:

Tank transportation is internationally recognized as the safest mode of transportation of chemicals and food. In the process of distributing chemicals and food to various places, compared with other modes, it is a unique means of transportation without running, emitting, leakage and avoiding the pollution of goods.
